Working Dogs

Strong Foundation

Each dog is started at 6 months old on yearlings in the corral. The main objective is to simply move the cattle and for the dog to develop an interest and begin working off of natural instincts.Teaching the young dog directions and how to cast out around me and the herd is the next step in the training process and will usually occur a couple months into the training. After the dog can consistently obey directional commands, I will begin having the dog herd cattle towards me and hold them.

I start each dog on verbal commands and add a whistle later in the training. All of my finished dogs will work off whistle commands alone.

Reliable Partner

On our ranch operation it is not uncommon for me to move cows alone. I rely very heavily on my working dogs natural instincts to know where they need to be positioned. My dog or team of dogs assume the role of a person and are expected to manage their part of the herd without supervision. That could mean holding a steady position or to drive them in a forward motion with me.

My main goal for using working dogs on our ranch is to create a low stress environment for the cattle. I place a lot of value on a dog that can travel well, work with a level head, and turn on the aggressiveness when needed.
